DR. DAVID L. ALLEN, SR., a musician extraordinaire in skills, talent, and temperament, is truly a man of his time. This renowned, multi-talented artist has been gifted with many talents. As a known trendsetter, he has reached an unparalleled peak of professionalism that goes beyond the mundane, as he constantly endeavors to set new standards of excellence. His artistry has gained him much respect throughout the United States and abroad.
Dr. Allen is a talented composer, musician, clinician, producer, director, and publisher. He has been producing concerts, music workshops, and recordings for over five decades. Recognized as one of the top writers in gospel music, he has mentored, performed and recorded with most of the top gospel artists.
Dr. Allen has achieved national recognition and exposure as a result of his affiliation and work with the Gospel Music Workshop of America, which was founded by the Reverend James Cleveland. In August of 1994, Allen was named Co-chairman of the Youth/Young Adult Division of GMWA by its board of directors.
The timeless gospel music classic, “NO GREATER LOVE” (penned by Allen), has been recorded 12 times by various artists, including twice by the GMWA Mass Choir. Mr. Allen has composed more than 500 songs.
David L. Allen, Sr. has worked with the North Carolina Black Repertory Company (NCBRC) in productions including Amen Corner, God’s Trombones, and Black Nativity. He has collaborated with the late Larry Leon Hamlin, artistic director of the NCBRC, in A SYMPHONY TO GOD IN SONG, a musical presentation created by Allen featuring choir, full orchestra, and some of the top artists in gospel music for more than 40 years.
Dr. Allen served as Minister of Music at Ambassadors Cathedral in Winston-Salem, NC for 48 years. He served briefly in the same capacity at Bethany Community Church, Los Angeles, CA and at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC.
Dr. Allen is a 1979 graduate of Winston-Salem State University, with further studies at High Point University. He holds a B. S. degree in Health and Physical Education and certification in Special Education, K-12. He has been teaching school and coaching basketball for 23 years.
